My Story

I fell in love with Toastmasters. It wasn’t intended; it wasn’t expected; it wasn’t necessarily even wanted. It simply happened.

I’d started a podcast to help promote my business and my brand, and I wanted to minimize the ‘um’s and ‘ah’s and other fillers that littered my speech, so I thought I’d check out Toastmasters. It was an idle thought, but one that I did act on.

I got hooked. Not only did I join a Toastmasters Club, but I got engaged—actively participating and enjoying the process and the group. So when Toastmasters International held its annual Convention and offered streaming of the event, I started watching every contest and every breakout session and every other event I could.

I was mesmerized! The quality of the speeches was superb, and the whole event was inspiring and energizing. Meanwhile, I was beginning to present speeches to my Club. An ice breaker speech, a research speech, a speech on communication styles, and so on. And I was improving. I could tell that I was getting better, more fluid, more confident as a speaker.

I was becoming more confident as a person.

Public Speaking

All speaking is public speaking. Whether you’re asking your boss for a raise, making a presentation to your peers or to management, or delivering a speech to hundreds of strangers, it’s all public speaking.

But what was the process for developing and presenting a powerful speech? I basically bumbled my way through my first few speeches. And those were abysmal speeches I now realize! What recipe could I follow, what ingredients could I use, to craft a compelling speech? To make a powerful point? To achieve success?

I read and I searched and I researched — and ultimately I found some formulas that work. I found a process to use to craft a powerful, compelling speech. The process gave me confidence, and with confidence came a level of comfort and ease at the podium. With confidence came connection with my audience and irresistible results.
